A few days ago, World Vision announced it would hire Christians in same-sex marriages. The backlash and criticism from the evangelical Christian community was overwhelming. The Assemblies of God urged members to stop financially supporting World Vision as a result of their inability to maintain biblical standards for sexual morality. Over 2,000 child sponsors cancelled sponsorship in protest.

The backlash was so overwhelming that today, World Vision reversed its decision.

Below is an excerpt from a letter from World Vision:

The board acknowledge they made a mistake and chose to revert our longstanding conduct policy requiring sexual abstinence for all single employees and faithfulness within the Biblical covenant of marriage between a man and a woman … We are brokenhearted over the pain and confusion we have caused many of our friends who saw this decision as a reversal of our strong commitment to Biblical authority.

As a Christian organization, World Vision is just one of hundreds of organizations who must struggle with how to handle employment in an ever-changing world, while keeping Biblical principles.
